Spanish actor Jordi Caballero plays the recurring role of Eugenio Martínez on The Starz Watergate drama Gaslit starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn.
Eugenio Martínez is a real-life character and the Cuban member of the anti-Castro movement in the early 1960s. Eugenio was one of the five men recruited by G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt in 1972 for the Memorial Day weekend Watergate burglary at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington, D.C. He was the only person other than Richard Nixon to receive a presidential pardon in the scandal. Mr. Martínez was indelibly linked to a crime that set in motion the downfall of a president. “I wanted to topple Castro, and unfortunately I toppled the president who was helping us, Richard Nixon,” Mr. Martínez said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo in 2009.
Jordi Caballero and The Haves and the Have Nots star, Óscar Torre, are two of the Hispanic actors that represent the Latino community in the series. Both actors along with Chris Bauer, Scott Michael Morgan and Don DiPetta play “The Plumbers”. The infamous code name for their role in the scandal. “Playing Eugenio Martinez, a real- life Cuban activist, was a fascinating rear window into American politics in the 70’s”, says Jordi.
Gaslit is a modern take on the 1970 political Watergate scandal centering on untold stories and forgotten characters of the time. Julia Roberts stars as Martha Mitchell, the woman who took on Nixon. Sean Penn plays John Mitchell, the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate.
